In this month's skin cancer update video, Professor Giuseppe Argenziano discusses the metaphorical versus analytical approach to terminology in dermoscopy.
Giuseppe takes us through some real-life examples, first discussing the blink approach (looking at a dermoscopic image and knowing immediately what the lesion is) and how we use analytical language in cases where we don't know what the answer.
In cases where we are sure of the answer, however, metaphorical language is often more appropriate, as it can get to the point in describing the lesion. The question is whether or not the analytical approach is better than the metaphorical approach in reaching the correct diagnosis.
Giuseppe proposes the reasons why we need both.

Prof Giuseppe Argenziano is Professor of Dermatology at the Department of Dermatology, Second University of Naples; Coordinator of the Skin Cancer Unit Research Hospital Santa Maria Nuova, Reggio Emilia, Italy; President of the International Dermoscopy Society; and member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Giuseppe has developed early diagnosis techniques for melanoma, authored over 300 scientific works and has been invited as speaker and/or chairman in more than 400 national and international conferences in the field of dermatology. He has authored more than 450 scientific articles and more than 30 books, and his publications have received a total of 6,200 citations with an h-index value of 40 (Scopus 02/2015).
